[Capitalists] What do you think of this argument made by David Ellerman?

Today almost all working people are employed as private or public employees. The employer-employee relationship is usually described by various euphemisms such as hiring, employing, giving a job to, place-holding, and so forth. But from the economic viewpoint, it is the renting of a person similar to renting a car (called “hire-cars” in the UK) or an apartment, i.e., buying the flows of services of an entity instead of buying the entity itself.
To analyze this legal relationship of renting persons, we have to look at the facts of the matter regardless of the legal superstructure. The facts are that all the people who work in an enterprise, employees and working employers, are jointly de facto responsible for using up the other inputs and producing the products. But due to the human rental contract, which operates as if that human responsibility can be alienated and transferred, allows the employer to appropriate 100% of the positive and negative product, which means the employer owns all the assets produced and owes all the liabilities created in production, i.e., the employer legally appropriates the “whole product” (Menger, 1970 [1899]).
But that human responsibility cannot in fact be alienated and transferred by any voluntary acts of the employees. Just as a person cannot in fact alienate the decision about what to believe to another, so they cannot alienate the decision to do this or that to produce a widget in a productive process. All people can do voluntarily is to, say, follow another’s orders to do this or that, which means they are inextricably co-responsible for the results. The factual inalienability of a person’s responsible agency is non-controversial and perfectly well recognized by the Law when the person commits a crime–even as a slave or an employee.
Now what happens when the employer and employee “jointly carried out a [non-]criminal venture”? Do the employees suddenly turn into machines being “employed”by the all-responsible employer? No, the inalienable co-responsibility of the employees is the same as before. It is the response of the Law that changes. No crime has been committed so no need to hold a trial to explicitly implement the juridical principle of imputation; to assign the legal responsibility in accordance with the factual responsibility. The employer pays off 100% the input liabilities (the expenses) and thus has 100% claim on the produced outputs, and the employees qua employees have 0% of the negative and positive fruits of their labor. Since there is no actual transfer of responsible human agency from the labor-seller to the labor-buyer, the whole contract to buy-and-sell labor, i.e., to rent persons, is a legalized fraud on an institutional scale, and thus should be abolished along with the self-sale contract.
Responsible human action, i.e., “labor,” cannot be separated from the person–unlike the services of anything that is rented out, e.g., a mule, truck, or apartment.
Do you agree or disagree? What are the specific flaws you see in this argument?

Critic Reviews

ACG - Jeremy Penter - Wait for Sale
"The turn-based combat is a welcome change however combined with some weird decisions and a somewhat bland story its not all sunshine and rainbows for this new kid on the street."
Attack of the Fanboy - Joshua Garibay - 4 / 5 stars
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a bold shift in direction, one that succeeds more than it stumbles in the pursuit of its new design.
Bazimag - Sina Golabzade - Persian - 8.6 / 10
The transition from a top notch brawler to a JRPG feels totally seamless. The gameplay have all the good parts we expect from a JRPG translated to the language of the Yakuza series but it also has some of the bad parts like the need for grinding and some unfair boss fights. The story and new characters are presented in a way that make this new journey for the franchise very well worth taking.
COGconnected - Jaz Sagoo - 86 / 100
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the perfect update for a flagging series. Its clever storytelling, bizarre substories, and engrossing gameplay makes this one of the strongest entries in the franchise. Mixing deep societal messages with references to popular culture, the game is both hilarious and thought-provoking. It is very clear to see that with Ichiban Kasuga, the series is in safe hands
Cerealkillerz - Nick Erlenhof - German - 8.5 / 10
Yakuza: Lika A Dragon goes a different way but follows what made the series so great. The new protagonist, the story (besides some weak points), the crazy mini games, battle animations, summons and Ichiban Kasuga offer so much fun and action. Some boring dungeons in the middle of the game and balancing issues are the only downsides you should expect. Even if you are not a fan of turn based combat or haven't touched the series yet, you should give this a shot.
Daily Mirror - Eugene Sowah - 4 / 5 stars
Yakuza: Like a Dragon has definitely made some drastic changes to the series but without losing its original charm. The fast pace turn base system has so much added depth while still feeling like a Yakuza game.
The graphics are the best the series has seen to date, players will fall for the ridiculous Ichiban who is a well-worked new hero to the series. Other than the lag between different sections of the games and slightly clunky animations it's really hard to fault this reimagining of the legendary series.
Destructoid - Jordan Devore - 7.5 / 10
Like a Dragon isn't my favorite Yakuza, and its fresh turn-based combat eventually grows stale, but I have a lot of love for it. If it's your first game, it'll quickly initiate you into this wild, one-of-a-kind series.
Digitally Downloaded - Matt Sainsbury - 5 / 5 stars
Who knows if this wild experiment will bear fruit and become its own series. Yakuza: Like a Dragon has everything it needs; an excellent crop of new characters, and even a new playground to base a series in, as we hadn't been to Yokohama previously. The future of the series would depend on how turn-based combat sells in comparison to action brawler combat, I would assume. Either way, though, Like a Dragon is a delight. It's a parody-homage to every turn-based JRPG trope you've ever known, set against brilliant character writing and the traditional urban playgrounds that have built this series into something beloved. I hope the development team is rewarded for the inherent risk that they took with this undertaking.
Eurogamer - Malindy Hetfeld - No Recommendation / Blank
Like A Dragon pulls off an impressive JRPG makeover while simultaneously taking on all the flaws of the genre.
Everyeye.it - Giuseppe Carrabba - Italian - 8.5 / 10
Like a Dragon is the story of a carp that turns into a dragon, of a gang of scapegoats who decide to defy the established order and come to the head of a desperate situation. Ichiban Kasuga is an individual far from dojima's stoic and serious Dragon but has an equally kind soul and crackling personality, which makes him - along with his strange clique - the symbol of Yakuza's rebirth. A rebirth that passes through a fun and enjoyable but also improveable role-making formula. With this seventh chapter, in other words, the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has shown us the potential of what would seem to be his idea for the future of the series, which with the advent of next-gen consoles could give us great surprises.
GAMEtainment - Dennis Röger - German - 8.7 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon has made the leap into the RPG genre with flying colors. The story is kept exciting and you can't stop following Ichiban's vendetta.
The abundance of side tasks can be a bit overwhelming for the player at the beginning. But once you have played the game for a few hours, you know the most important points in the city. Time passes very quickly when playing darts or karting. By no means you need to believe that these actions are a waste of time. You get personality points which finally strengthen the fighting actions.
The fights bring a breath of fresh air to the row and put a smile on the players' faces. Through the different creative classes you attack the opponents with pigeons or wrestling moves instead of casting disdainful fireballs. Unfortunately, the invisible AoE range of abilities spoils the fun of the game. Also the unusually long races until a comrade reaches the enemy seem strange. A timeline showing the next actors would have been helpful too.
If you like the Yakuza series and are open for new things, you definitely have to go for Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Game Informer - Jeff Cork - 9.3 / 10
It's a new direction for the series, but Like a Dragon captures the essence of what came before while setting out on its own journey.
Game Revolution - Jason Faulkner - 4.5 / 5 stars
Yakuza fans were anxious about whether the series would survive without the glue of Kiryu Kazama to hold it together. However, Ichiban Kasuga is a worthy successor to the Dragon of Dojima, and Like a Dragon is a great new start for this fantastic series that will please long-time Yakuza fans and newcomers alike.
GameMAG - Russian - 9 / 10
You should look at Yakuza: Like a Dragon through the lens of it's protaginist. This game is unapologetically brash, unmistakable bold, life-affirming and insanely charismatic. The legend of Ichiban Kasuga journey, like a bright flame, tells us one familliar, but sweet and romantic idea - each and every one of us can become a true Hero, even if you have to fight the fate itself, while making your way through hundrends upon hundreds of random encounters.
GameSkinny - RobotsFightingDinosaurs - 10 / 10 stars
Yakuza: Like A Dragon isn't just a great Yakuza title - it's legitimately one of the best modern role-playing games there is.
GameSpew - Richard Seagrave - 8 / 10
Ultimately, despite all the changes that have been made, Yakuza: Like a Dragon feels very much like a Yakuza game. The combat may now be turn-based, and the scenery might be different, but this is still a game full of drama, thrilling battles, and a huge amount of side content, all smothered with an ample amount of humour. And I never thought I’d say this, but I didn’t miss Kazuma Kiryu one jot while playing it; Ichiban Kasuga is simply a more likeable fellow with more depth. So, if you like the Yakuza series, consider Yakuza: Like a Dragon a must-have.
GameSpot - Michael Higham - 9 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon's cast of misfits makes the wild RPG combat, absurd humor, and dramatic storytelling soar.
GameWatcher - Gavin Herman - 9.5 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon reminded me why I loved video games to begin with. I cannot think of a game this year that has gripped me this tightly and didn't let go. Here comes a game brimming with joy and excitement that is earnest with its drama and comedy. It's the sort of game you can gush about for hours, and I will long after this review is published. Anyone who loves RPGs, open world games, comedies, crime dramas, and games PERIOD should have a lot of fun with the newest Yakuza.
Gameblog - Romain Mahut - French - 9 / 10
As the Yakuza franchise is still trying to become a household franchise in the West, the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio decided to flip the switch and create a turn-based RPG. The result of that experiment, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, is a resounding success. The "dynamic RPG" gameplay fits the Yakuza universe and tropes like a glove and its mechanics are surprisingly deep. And the fact that the game's new characters are lovable doesn't hurt. The turn-based gameplay will probably put off some gamers but Yakuza: Like a Dragon truly deserves a shot. The Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio made the JRPG genre proud.
GamesRadar+ - Hirun Cryer - 4.5 / 5 stars
Yakuza: Like a Dragon impressively pulls off the switch to an RPG in style, providing an excellent combat system supported by loveable characters, and a tantalising main storyline with meaningful side quests.
GamingBolt - Pramath - 9 / 10
Yakuza is reborn in this brilliant and compelling new addition to series canon that recontextualizes series tropes and mechanics for an entirely new genre, delivering one of the best outings the series has ever seen.
GamingTrend - David Flynn - 95 / 100
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has topped themselves once again with Yakuza: Like a Dragon! This new take on Yakuza brings a lot of fun, new ideas to the table while remaining its heartfelt self. Turn based combat is somehow a perfect fit for this new direction, the characters are all instantly loveable, and the story is endearingly melodramatic.
Generación Xbox - Adrian - Spanish - 9 / 10
Yakuza: Like A Dragon is a great turn-based RPG that will keep you hooked on the screen for many hours. One of the best games of the genre on Xbox.
God is a Geek - Chris White - 9.5 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a phenomenal entry into the Yakuza franchise, with an interesting new protagonist, a compelling story, and a combat system that constantly mixes things up.
Heavy - Elton Jones - 8.8 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon largely succeeds at moving the series forward in a bold new direction. Kasuga and his band of unlikely heroes are incredibly interesting and make it so easy to care about their crazy antics. The new main locale is massive and plays host to so many compelling things to do. Getting wrapped up in everything Like a Dragon has to offer is worth it and you’ll easily pour 30+ hours into its captivating tale. The turn-based battle system works in parts, but its annoying character placement issues and faulty summons system keep it from being a total victory. Like a Dragon is still worth hopping into if you’re looking for an amazing parody of RPG tropes, however. It’s a Yakuza sequel that signals a bright future ahead for the beloved franchise.
Hey Poor Player - Francis DiPersio - 4.5 / 5
No doubt about it, SEGA took some considerable risks when they decided to change their established formula so radically for Yakuza: Like A Dragon. But in the end, I think the gamble paid off. Ryū ga Gotoku Studio's latest offering may not pack the punchy, moment to moment gameplay of its predecessors. Still, it makes up for that with its more in-depth brawls, an engaging job system, and a story that focuses not just on a single protagonist, but on several compelling heroes with their own complex motivations. While beat-'em-up fanatics may find this change in direction blasphemous, I couldn't be happier. If you're a Yakuza fan who loves JRPGs, adding this underworld epic to your PS4 library is a no-brainer.
Hobby Consolas - Rafael Aznar - Spanish - 90 / 100
It keeps the great narrative and setting from the Yakuza series, using a new protagonist, a city that has more life than even Kamurocho and turn-based combats. It suffers from some of the classical troubles of the J-RPG, but it is a breath of fresh air and a great example of how to reinvent a franchise.
IGN - Tristan Ogilvie - 7 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon takes some bold steps in a new direction for the series but neglects to maintain its balance.
IGN Italy - Biagio Etna - Italian - 9.1 / 10
An extraordinary and courageous restart for the new Sega title, an extraordinary JRPG that lays the foundations for even more prosperous growth.
IGN Spain - Álex Pareja - Spanish - 8.5 / 10
Yakuza Like a Dragon is a real and huge JRPG who knows how to maintain the essence of the saga. Fun fighting system and deep script with too many ups and downs to justify the new playable elements. I hope this new formula that works and gives new wings to the franchise will be repeated.
Inverse - Jen Glennon - 9 / 10
Like a Dragon is right up there with Yakuza 0 in terms of sheer fun-factor and an almost dizzying abundance of stuff to see and do.
Metro GameCentral - Nick Gillett - 7 / 10
The turn-based battles don't fully convince but the new protagonist and bizarre mini-games still feel distinctively and entertainingly Yakuza.
Noisy Pixel - Azario Lopez - 9 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon makes for an excellent new entry in this long-running series. The developers took a chance on a new protagonist and battle system, which forces fans out of their comfort zone for a very different yet, familiar Yakuza experience. Although the opening exposition can be a bit overwhelming, this is a standout video game on its own with plenty of emotional story beats, insane sub-stories, and plenty of ways to spend your time around Ijincho.
PC Gamer - Andy Kelly - 72 / 100
A fun, charming, and occasionally brilliant Yakuza game, let down by an overabundance of repetitive turn-based battles.
PCGamesN - Ian Boudreau - 9 / 10
An utterly charming yarn about friendship and kindness that breathes gritty modern life into the quaint JRPG format of classic Dragon Quest.
Pixel Arts - Arman Akbari - Persian - 8.5 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a very good sequel to the popular Yakuza series which shows that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios still manages to create a great story and narrative. The game's turn-based battles are good in themselves, but due to the extreme use of enemies in the environment, they soon became repetition.
PlayStation Universe - Joe Apsey - 8.5 / 10
Yakuza: Like A Dragon is an impressive and quality JRPG that successfully acts as a jumping in-point for new fans and also ties itself to the series' past in exciting and engaging ways. The turn-based combat has been infused with some mechanics that help retain the action and over-the-top hilarity the series is known for. Mini-games once again shine and there is a lot packed into Ijincho. Like A Dragon paves the way for a bright future for the franchise.
Player2.net.au - Stephen del Prado - A or higher
It was a gamble on Sega’s part to make such major changes to a tried and true formula, even more bewildering given its recent meteoric rise in Western markets. If Yakuza: Like A Dragon proves anything, it’s that fortune does indeed favour the bold.
Polygon - Kazuma Hashimoto - Unscored
Like a Dragon's story attempts to touch on certain social issues that are relevant in present-day Japan, such as classism, social status, sex work, and government corruption on a prefectural level. However, the writing often lacks the nuance or range to address the topics at hand, and doesn't give any of them adequate room to breathe. The second half of the game gains some measure of focus as plot threads tie together and result in genuinely surprising twists, but when Like a Dragon drops the ball, it drops it hard. Despite this, the Japanese cast's performances sell the story with evocative deliveries that breathe life into the characters. The finale is an emotional one that brought me to tears and moved me, just as most previous Yakuza games have.
PowerUp! - Greg Newbegin - 9 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon, when all of its pieces are taken together, is not only a fantastic new direction for the series, it's also one of its best titles.
Press Start - Kieron Verbrugge - 9 / 10
Yakuza Like a Dragon is both a fresh start and a shot in the arm that caters to series veterans and newcomers like. It bears all the hallmarks of a great Yakuza game, while making a damned good case for its revamped battle system. After Yakuza 6 topped the rest of the franchise with a matured and succinct focus it feels even more exciting to see the whole thing blown wide open again and have Ryu ga Gotoku just run wild. Kudos is deserved at Sega of America for their commitment to the game's localization as well, which is incredibly considered and comprehensive. I think I've found a new favourite Yakuza game.
RPG Site - 7 / 10
With a new battle system and new main character, Yakuza: Like A Dragon aims to be a new entry point to Yakuza newcomers even though it is anything but that.
Rocket Chainsaw - Adam Ghiggino - 4.5 / 5 stars
So, the takeaway is this – Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a successful experiment. So successful that I think it should be the template for much of the series going forward.
Saudi Gamer - Essam Al-Shahwan - Arabic - 9 / 10
A brilliant reinvention of the series that still manages to faithfully capture its essence, with an eclectic cast of characters, the star being Ichiban himself. A great entry that goes toe-to-toe with Yakuza 0.
Shacknews - Donovan Erskine - 8 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a successful pivot from traditional Yakuza mainstays. The game goes heavy on style, while still packing in enough substance to keep players satisfied. The party system and new RPG elements give players more ways to play than ever before. The turn-based combat is solid, and never feels too foreign. Longtime fans of the franchise will appreciate what Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and SEGA have to offer in Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Siliconera - Graham Russell - 9 / 10
Much like Kasuga’s dragonfish tattoo feels like a quirky but faithful successor to Kiryu’s dragon, Yakuza: Like a Dragon rebuilds the franchise by leaving a lot of it in place. The new protagonist doesn’t feel like he has seven games of story in him, but his eagerness to join the fray could carry the next few entries.
Stevivor - Matt Gosper - 8 / 10
After the culture shock of such a total change to the Yakuza recipe, I’m extremely glad the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio team took such a big leap when Kiryu’s tale came to an end. Like A Dragon is a revitalised game full of fresh ideas and proves that the series won’t be re-treading the same ground with Ichiban in the driver’s seat. If this is the first step into the new age of Yakuza, I can’t wait to see how bonkers the next game will be.
TechRaptor - Robert Scarpinito - 8 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon refreshes the action with a turn-based JRPG that retains its charming identity, but it falls into some pitfalls that are emblematic of the genre.
The Games Machine - Danilo Dellafrana - Italian - 8.2 / 10
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is an interesting new entry into the criminal universe created by SEGA, and undoubtedly represents the most courageous and anarchic chapter so far. It's not entirely convincing, but what works bodes well for the future of the series.
TheSixthAxis - Thomas Hughes - Unscored
Yakuza Like a Dragon is an enjoyable new twist on the series, although it's not hard to imagine that many long-time fans of the series will be put off by its slow pace. In a day and age where video game companies rarely take risks, Like a Dragon is a refreshing change of pace for a series that risked starting to feel stale.
TrustedReviews - Jade King - 4.5 / 5 stars
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a triumph, and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio should be commended for redefining such a seasoned franchise, despite the backlash it might have received. Leaving Kazuma Kiryu behind hasn't been easy, but Ichiban Kasuga and company have crafted a compelling path into the future that I cannot wait to see continue.
VideoGamer - Josh Wise - 9 / 10
This is the crux of Yakuza: Like a Dragon. It is fascinated by the way that games lurk at the soft verges of life, vesting our days with dreams.
Wccftech - Kai Powell - 9.1 / 10
The mean streets of Yokohama offer the opportunity for a new cast, a new suit, and a new hero. Ichiban Kasuga might not be the role model in the same way that Kiryu-chan was, but this dragon's quest might be the most fun Yakuza title to date!
Windows Central - Zackery Cuevas - 5 / 5 stars
Yakuza: Like a Dragon feels like everything I ever wanted in a game. Once the game stomps on the gas, it very rarely slows down. Its unique cast of characters and gameplay had me hooked and wanting more, and it almost feels like it never stops giving. Even after the story ends at the 45+ hour mark, I was ready to fight more, complete more side missions, and squeeze out every drop of gameplay that this game has to offer.
ZTGD - Ken McKown - 9 / 10
The Yakuza series continues to grow and expand in the gaming world. I love its quirky humor and deep narratives. This new entry begins a new saga and I cannot wait to see how the story of Ichi evolves over time. If it is even half as good as Kiryu’s the studio will have another series of great games on its hands. Everything about this title feels good and for those worried about having previous knowledge, don’t be concerned. Like a Dragon is a wonderful jumping in point for the series and also one of the best titles in it to date. Don’t sleep on this game, it is worth digging into.

NEXE INNOVATIONS information and discussion.

Just did their IPO on Friday.
TSX.V: NEXE.
Initiation Report - NEXE Innovations Big Changes Come in Small Sizes - Compostable Single-Serve Coffee Company Overview
NEXE Innovations is a cutting-edge developer of plant-based materials focused on replacing plastics with entirely compostable components. Initially targeting the single-use coffee market, NEXE has patented and manufactured 100% compostable products as quality alternatives to Keurig brewing systems K-Cups and Nestle’s Nespresso pods. With an addressable market estimated at US$19 billion in 2020, NEXE is forecasting their single-serve coffee segment will grow from under $500k in 2020 to $20 million in 2021 as they ramp up existing production lanes and take delivery of additional lanes delayed due to COVID-19. As the company grows, NEXE plans to leverage their materials expertise and IP to enter markets beyond of single-serve coffee. The company plans to announce an IPO in Q4 2020. Key Takeaways Growth for single-serve consumables is estimated at 7% CAGR through 2024, with 40 to 50 billion single-serve cups to be sold in 2020. NEXE will be the sole North American patent holder of 100% compostable K-Cups and Nespresso pods that provide the same look and quality as the original designs, unlike current market compostable cups using “mesh” shell designs that provide less than ideal storage and brewing conditions for the grounds. Less than 25% of all single-serve coffees will be recycled. As investors focus on sustainability and ESG investments grows, tackling recycling and “cradle-to-cradle” product lifecycles will become more important. Keurig and Nespresso already deal with major backlash for both lack of recyclability and the complexity of the recycle process. COVID-19 has hurt smaller independent coffee distributors who typically sell in brick and mortar locations. These smaller distributors consider sustainability a core goal of their operations, and NEXE will provide them with alternative sources of revenue via single-serve consumables that remain in-line with their investment in sustainability. Leveraging their current knowledge and that of key stakeholders, develop a suite of plant-based materials IP for growth into the broader single-use plastics market, effectively doubling the TAM. Conclusion
We think NEXE's timing for entry into the single-serve cup market is perfect. The catalysts via work-from-home and self-isolation is increasing consumption, investors are increasingly ESG focused, and the limited options consumers have for quality compostable cups make NEXE ideally positioned to take advantage of said tailwinds. Deeper Dive – Company and Market Analysis
Company Snapshot Co-founded by Darren Footz (previously President of Granville Island Coffee) and Ash Guglani (Investment Banking) in 2014, NEXE's management team brings deep expertise in coffee roasting, packing, and distribution, forming the backbone needed to support their patented innovative technology. Management retains ownership of about 35% of the company, and the three previous raises from 2016 to 2019 have all been at increasing prices providing further confirmation on the progress the company has made since inception.
The company’s balance sheet remains clean of substantial encumberment, as the previous financings and government grants have covered operating expenses to date. The only debt on the books currently is government debt. To fund the working capital and capex required for expansion in 2021 NEXE is raising $13.6M at $0.80/share, oversubscribed from the original $9M, giving the company a pre-money of $51M prior to IPO. Valuation
Given the inherent risks in a start-up and using a weighted DCF and Multiples method we net an intrinsic value of $0.93 /share on a non-diluted basis post-raise. Due to the nature of the business and segment growth, we feel the aggressive growth being forecast is reasonably attainable and worth the 5x 2022 EBITDA valuation and 10% DCF terminal growth with a high bar ROE of 15%. Valuing early stage companies is highly speculative, and our estimates are not intended to be used as the sole basis for investing.
The Market & Its Waste Problem
At the beginning of 2019 almost 41% of Americans owned a single-serve coffee brewing machine and sales of single-serve cups had gone from 2.3 billion in 2010 to 10 billion in 2019 for Keurig alone, a 17% compounded annual growth rate. Considering Keurig has about a 20% market share, we estimate 40 to 50 billion single-serve cups will be sold in 2020 with a total addressable market to manufacturers and distributors of around US$18-20 billion. Additionally, the catalysts for growth in the single-serve cup market have never been stronger as people work more from home and self-isolate, integrating single-serve coffees into their daily routine in lieu of traditional alternatives like coffee shops.
“From a personal standpoint, it saves 20 seconds of your day," he says. "What's that worth?" - John Sylvan, inventor of K-Cups regarding the environmental damage they’ve caused.
In 2018 the world collectively threw away around 56 billion single-serve cups into landfills, an equivalent of 896,000 tonnes or 3% of the total food waste the US generates annually. Consumers are becoming exceedingly aware of the negative environmental impact their coffee choices have. Interestingly, most understand the negative impacts but don’t change their behaviors; we theorize this is due to lack of quality sustainable alternatives to existing single-serve cups. Those who do attempt to dispose of traditional single-serve cups properly, as they are advertised as recyclable, are faced with challenges making the experience anything but convenient. This issue is made apparent by a recent class-action lawsuit in July 2019 that shows manufacturers definition of “recyclable” can vary from what an individual, or the law, might reasonably assume.
For example, only certain parts of a Keurig cup are recyclable, so you’ll need to separate each part before properly disposing of them. For Nespresso, you need to use their included red disposal bags and drop your pods off at certain Nespresso locations so they can take them to their custom recycling facility to process. These barriers to recycling are delegated to consumers who usually end up throwing the single-serve cups into the garbage.
The waste described above is not unique to the coffee world. The increase in demand for small and convenient packages with quality designs and unique visuals is expected to drive the total addressable market of single-use packages from US$34 billion to US$47 billion by 2025. This is a substantial amount of product that consumers will want to be more sustainable and compostable, and NEXE plans on being part of the solution by growing beyond single-serve coffee.
The Solution
In an 11,000 sq. ft facility in Surrey, BC, NEXE Innovations can receive, roast, pack and ship up to 20 million units of K-Cups and has ordered an additional five “lanes” from Italy that will increase production capabilities to around 120 million pods in 2021. Generating this amount of sustainable, 100% compostable single-serve cups is no small engineering feat.
Using patented materials and assembly techniques, NEXE creates an outer fibrous shell (made of various sustainable plants that aren’t sources of food) that is bonded via ultrasonic welding to an inner PLA (polylactic acid) shell made from corn husks and leftover sugarcane stalks. On an individual basis each component isn’t overly difficult to produce, but it becomes significantly more so when designing for harsh environments like a brewing machine. Most fibrous biodegradable materials breakdown in 90°C water, so NEXE uses the PLA inner shell to both protect the outer shell from water and lockout air to keep the coffee grounds fresh with a 12-month shelf life. PLA is delicate, so a fibrous external shell provides the structural integrity to withstand both exposure to the elements and the high pressures inside the brewing machine used to move water. NEXE’s patented design avoids the use of glues to bind components and plastics for assembly, helping to distinguish themselves from their competitors as glues are tougher to apply consistently during manufacturing, can contain VOC’s, or otherwise degrade due to high temperatures during brewing.
Pictured: NEXE's manufacturing facilities
NEXE’s patented designs and manufacturing techniques provides an intellectual moat that will keep competitors from developing products of similar quality at scale for a few years. This moat is bolstered by the largest players, Nespresso and Keurig, focusing on recyclability instead of compostability due to the use of aluminum and plastics in their design.
Importantly, NEXE has put its pods through rigorous testing with third parties to confirm the compostability properties of their K-Cups, and indeed determined that while the fibrous exterior composts completely in the span of a few weeks, their PLA inner shell take the better part of 70 days in a composting facility. Note, anything under 84 days is considered compostable under most regulatory body guidelines, European and North American, and the Ontario government has endorsed the compostability of Club Coffee’s pods which also contain PLA.
At the end of the day the consumer wants a quality pour from their machine, and there are three main variables that determine a pours quality aside from the beans. Firstly, time to extract, which can be controlled by the shape of the K-Cup, the compaction of the grounds, and the grade of the mesh filter. Temperature, which is typically set by the machine and constant. Lastly, pressure, which while also set by the machine can be manipulated based on the compaction of the grounds and fineness of the mesh filter. NEXE can control all of these to fine tune their product to consistently deliver the best pour unlike Club Coffee and Maxwell House, their closest competitors, whom simply cannot due to the nature of their cup design.
While the short-term focus is the single-serve coffee market, there is a US$34 billion market for food, beverage, personal care and more that NEXE can pivot their existing materials technology to concentrate on. In collaboration with the University of British Columbia, the Government of Canada and various other research groups, NEXE is planning to grow their existing patent portfolio by 2021 to include the design and manufacturing of compostable products suitable as replacements for various containers, such as replacements for extruded plastics like yogurts, condiments, and other “snackables”. The Non-Competitive Landscape
Kraft Foods (Gevalia, Tassimo), Nestle (Nespresso, McCafe), and Keurig are all major competitors in this highly consolidated market space, with the top 5 brands holding around 50% of the market share. In 2020, Keurig and Nespresso will produce around 20 billion capsules and will classify all of them as recyclable. Both Keurig and Nespresso aren’t competing with NEXE on compostability, and neither is Rogers Family Coffee or Kraft Foods, so we consider NEXE to have a competitive moat as there are few incumbents and the barriers to entry from knowledge and technical expertise required is substantial.
Other more aligned competition does exist from smaller manufacturers, most notably Halo, Maxwell House, and Club Coffee, but unlike NEXE, these are not materials companies. Club Coffee and Maxwell House produce very similarly designed products; a paper lid, a PLA ring that is used to give shape and bind the lid, and a cornstarch or similar fiber mesh body that doubles as a filter.
There are a few issues with this design. Firstly, the mesh body doesn’t provide resistance to water the same way a rigid PLA cup would, which results in water being able to take paths that extract less coffee flavor than a regular pour. Also, the mesh body exposes the coffee grounds to air which oxidizes the grounds and degrades the quality of the grounds. Regardless of potentially lower quality coffee, Club Coffee’s first to market BPI Certified plant-based coffee pod has sold over a billion cups as of April 2020, and has built partnerships with Jumping Bean, Muskoka Roastery, McCafé and Presidents Choice. We think this demonstrates the current lack of options that consumers and companies face regarding compostability and confirms the sizeable addressable market that sustainable single-serve coffee pods are carving out. Halo, a UK company, provides a 100% compostable Nespresso pod replacement made solely of sugar cane and paper pulp. This company is most similar to NEXE in that they’ve developed an alternative to the original Nespresso pod that’s compostable any retains the same quality form and function. There are drawbacks, as the sugar can and paper pulp is enough to withstand the Nespresso brewing machine but not much more, which is good because the product is biodegradable just about anywhere within a few weeks at regular temperatures, however, the shelf life is limited as the product isn’t capable of being airtight. This is a better engineered product than the Club Coffee and Maxwell House offerings, but like those other products it must be consumed within a shorter timeframe than traditional single-serve cups as exposure to air reduces its shelf life. Halo’s product comes at a premium of £1 per pod, or $1.72CAD, which is over double the price of a normal Nespresso pod at $0.78-0.86CAD. Final Thoughts
People are becoming more knowledgeable about the products they consume and the way in which they are produced. Proof of this increased focus is the flow of capital into Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principle investing funds which have attracted $71.1 billion globally in the first half of 2020; that’s up from $20.6 billion in all of 2019, and twelve times the $5.5 billion that was pulled in 2018. In more obvious day-to-day examples, we see plastic straws being banned in favor of paper, restaurants being forced to use biodegradable packaging for takeout instead of plastics even though it’ll end up increasing costs to the customer and make transportation of certain foods harder. Society is moving towards using sustainable consumables.
Single-serve coffee is estimated to be growing at around a 7% CAGR over the next 4-6 years, and the near-term catalysts of working from home and self-isolation due to COVID disruptions make our $18-$20B addressable market for 2020 appear conservative. Small independent sustainable roasters will be looking to diversify their revenue streams as more consumers shop online and getting access to the single-serve coffee market that NEXE will provide would be an excellent way to achieve that.
The lack of meaningful competition and quality products have allowed an arguably inferior engineered product in Club Coffee to grow sales to around 1 billion pods in the span of a few years and now dominates the compostable pod segment. If NEXE can capture even 2% of the market that Club Coffee sells into (or 0.05% of the overall market), they would generate $10M in revenue. Management is targeting 0.22% overall market penetration by 2022, which brings them closer to $44M in annual sales.
NEXE already has approximately 12M of the 20M initial production capacity reserved by an independent roaster should NEXE meet certain design milestones. The near-term plan going to forward is to establish additional independent roasters as partners across Western Canada, California, and the Pacific Northwest as more lanes and production capability comes online.

Lastly, there is the significant value in the technology itself that NEXE has developed. NEXE will not only be able to generate revenues from licensing its technology regarding single-serve coffee but will grow it’s IP regarding assembling various organic materials in innovative ways to address the single-use plastics market as a whole. NEXE plans on being able to target food and beverage products like yogurt, fruit, soup, and more, doubling the total addressable market beyond single-serve coffee.

re: the failed UN Security Council meeting on October 20

The Security Council, which has the exclusive right to intervene, held a meeting and was supposed to rule on enforcing ceasefire but one of the five (China, France, Russia, UK, USA) permanent members "sabotaged" the vote, thus approving only a general statement by the Council. It's not clear who vetoed and why.

re: NSS agents engaging with Azeri army

The National Security Services agents' team engaged with the Azeri army and published the video yesterday. It was posted here but without details. Here is the breakdown:
An Azeri armored vehicle drives forward, presumably to help their troops who are in a Toyota pickup, commonly used by Syrian jihadists.
The armored vehicle reaches/passes the Toyota and uses a machine gun to fire at Armenian soldiers who are somewhere in front (left side of the video, invisible). Azeri bullet traces are seen hitting the ground.
The driver decides to retreat. He makes a U-turn but at the 1:04 mark, he gets hit with an Armenian RPG. On the far-left corner, there is a small white cloud that may or may not show the Armenian soldier's firing position.
Now the Azeri vehicle is disabled and burning. He continues to use the machine gun attached to the roof against Armenians who have, at this point, ambushed him from multiple corners. [video cuts]
An Azeri tank rushes to help. It reaches the destroyed Azeri armored vehicle and stops to engage with Armenians. At that moment, from the left side, another Armenian soldier fires an RPG and disables the tank. You can see the little grey cloud/air-distortion caused by the missile as it travels through the air towards the tank at the 2:08 mark.
The third Azeri armored vehicle, that was accompanying the tank, decides to escape. Fate unknown.

22:00 army spokesman Artsrun's briefing: the battles continued nonstop all night because the Azeri infiltrator groups near Shushi forests/gorges are trying to "solve" certain problems. After meeting our army's resistance they usually refuse to engage in long battles. We were able to encircle and destroy several groups.
Azeri president says his army is attacking towards Shushi, however, there is a question, how come do we have to seek these "attackers" and destroy them one by one. During any war, you don't have to "seek" the attackers. The attacker just "comes".
Heavy battles resumed in the morning with the use of artillery. Throughout the day, in the north, center, and south, Azeris used small groups and a minimal number of armored vehicles to try to advance but were thrown back after sustaining losses.
I predict tonight will be the same. The anti-infiltrator "sanitary groups" will continue to clear the forests. We published a video of destroyed infiltrators yesterday and could publish another tomorrow.
Those Azeri infiltrators and mercenaries, who push forward with a hope to achieve a result for November 9th (National Azeri Flag Day), with a hope to uplift their spirits after days of failures, are doomed.
I don't know if it's Aliyev's or Erdogan's idea, but every neutralized mercenary and Azeri soldier has been carrying the Azeri flag. We find the flags in everyone's' pockets. Aliyev is desperately trying to uplift his nation's spirit but he doesn't realize that these groups cannot solve problems.
It's clear that the infiltrators and mercenaries won't succeed because Shushi and nearby residents are defending their settlements. Yes, the battles continue in these areas, but the situation is not dire. There are technical and logistic difficulties but Operation Gyorbagyor2020 will continue, and these gorges and forests will turn into their Hell.
For three days straight, Azeris tried to break through the Martuni area (center east) to control a highway to save their infiltrator groups who are trapped. They failed. Operation Gyorbagyor continues.
I don't know, maybe Aliyev promised large sums to anyone who can infiltrate and plant a flag in Shushi, or maybe they do so under the threat of being shot?
Q: what's the latest into on the recent battles near Qarin Tak (south of Shushi).
A: the neutralization of these groups continues. Just now I got info that a 30-member group was encircled and destroyed. Some managed to escape. Some of the infiltrators were killed while trying to climb the Qarin Tak rocks (a few km south of Shushi).
Q: how safe are the roads? Reporters Without Borders agency says 80 reporters cannot leave Artsakh safely.
A: we've mentioned before that Azeris target journalists, civilians, clinics, and churches. Nothing surprising. I spoke with many of these reporters; the army has created all the conditions for them to leave if they wish. There are no barriers. It's another question that they could be targeted while traveling but there are safer roads.
The Sotk-Qarvachar road is safe for travel, I used it yesterday and today, but it's still restricted for civilians as a precautionary measure. The Shushi road has been cleared from infiltrators and there are Armenian patrols alongside but it's still restricted for civilians for now.
The battles continue. They aren't very intense but there are certain difficulties associated with the nature of infiltration warfare. There is no easy way to face all the enemies and destroy them. Today they sneaked-in equipment near Karmis Shuka but were found and destroyed, including a vehicle that was carrying personnel.
They try to achieve even the slightest success for propaganda but as you can see our soldiers are determined. We will win.

UK conservative opinions on Uk policy ideas (immigration, unions, advertising, electoral reform etc)

I would call myself a libertarian. I am a Marxist in that I use a materialistic interpretation of history and events. I have some ideas that I think would benefit the UK. Some of which are in line with conservative ideas. I would love to know what you guys think or what you think would be a better idea. Please criticize. I hope to have a dialogue about this as much as possible.
Drugs
de criminalise all drugs (much like portugal) treat it as a mental health issue. A lot of people take drugs because of homelessness and poverty so by dealing with those hard drug use will go down. Legalise Cannabis, Mushrooms (and most hallucinegics), LSD, MDMA and Cocaine (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2009/jun/13/bad-science-cocaine-study). tax them inline with the estimated costs for misuse of them. regulate them like tobacco and alcohol.
Obesity and Food
Ban the sale of energy drinks to children below 16. ban the sale of very sweet confectiionary and drinks to children below 16 (some mexican states have done it recently), This includes in schools. tax very fatty, sugary or nutritionly rare foods in line with what the estimated costs are for the NHS to deal with the health problems caused by them (much the same way we do with alcohol, tobacco and in my tax system other drugs). Possibly make it mandatory to fortify very cheap foods with minerals and vitamins so the impoverished can get more nutrients. although the body doesnt absorb these very well so it might be pointless.
Make it illegal for a company/business to throw away food stuff and make them donate it to foodbanks/food charities.
Advertising/product placement/Games/Gambling
Ban all adverts to children in any way. Ban alcohol ads, vaping ads, gambling ads, payday loan ads, ads for big SUV/highly polluting vehicles. Ban product placement, ban TV shows for kids that have toys explicitly linked to them. Ban Loot box system in games. Make fixed odds betting machines have lower returns. Either tax very highly online gambling sites (spin wheel style), forced break periods or make it a state monolopy. Gambling is effectively a license to print money. why shouldn't the state take the proceeds from what is a worthless noncontributing part of the economy. All ads that have photoshopped used need to a sign saying they've been photoshopped and very thin models have to have a medical certificate that they are healthy (like france).
NHS
repeal the Blair laws making the NHS act more a competitive business which have proved to ineffective. Make the English NHS system more in line with the Scottish system.
Tax or in some make people who do more dangerous activities pay a small amount extra for the increased likelihood of needing the services of the NHS like motorcyclists, horse riders, extreme sportspeople.
Free speech
repeal a lot of the Blair era censorship legislation. repeal with 2014 porn ban.
prostitution
legalize brothels. but make prostitution licensed to stop sex trafficking. Mandate the wearing of a condom. Possibly make it that you can only be a prostitute if you hold a british passport to stop sex trafficking from abroad.
Trade Unions
repeal the anti-trade union legislation.
Electoral reform
I think a system like Single Transferrable Vote would be better than FPTP. I think that registered political parties should somehow get some minimum funding from the state to facilitate a healthy and varied democracy. Remove the hereditary peerages from the house of lords.
availability of credit
I don't think payment plans for normal consumer goods should be available. I think it should be harder to get a pay day loan than it currently is.
Fines
I think that fines for speeding, other fine-able offenses should be means tested and shouldn't have a cap.
Copyright
I think that Copyright should expire for everything after 50 years. So at the this point everything from before 1969 should be in the public domain. I think any British citizen creator who leaves the UK to not pay income tax should have the copyright for their work removed in the UK when they do leave.
Welfare
Introduce Universal basic income in the UK. replace all the means tested and tedious bureaucracy associated with current system. I think it should start from 18 years old and increase slightly each year. Maybe start at 5,000 pounds and by your thirties move up to 10,000 pounds by the time you want to start having kids etc. I think UBI would make work always pay more than being on benefits. It would disincentive benefits fraud as well as people having children to acquire more benefits.
Tax
I do believe in a progressive taxation system. I think the tax free threshold should be raised. I think the brackets for taxation are good at the moment but I would add higher tax thresholds at higher rates e.g. 50% at 200,000, 60% at 500,000. I am unsure what the upper limit should be for tax rate or income. The rich will leave anyway (Jim ratcliffe most recenty) no matter what the tax rate is. If they ever wants to come into the UK they should have to pay to do so. If they have a knighthood it should be taken away.
Immigration.
remove all EU citizens not in critical under supplied or high paying jobs from the UK as well migratory workers from outside the EU. Syrian Civil war refugees should go back as well. basically as many people as possible should be made to go back to their country of origin without directly endangering their lives. I think the pay threshold for workers to legally migrate here should be much higher probably 40,000 pounds a year. there should be not net migration to the UK each year.
children and population growth
I think the UK should aim for net 0% population growth. I think couples who want to have kids should be made to screen for any hereditary recessive genetic diseases before they plan to have a child so they can know if they're kid is going to be disabled. Possibly people should have to have in the womb embryo testing as well to see if theyre child has any genetic diseases. legalise child euthanasia (like belgium and the netherlands https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groningen_Protocol). I think people should be discouraged from having lots of children especially those without the means to provide for them. however if people do decide to have kids I think the provision for parenting should be a lot. 2+ years of paid maternity leave. free parenting lessons, support as much as possible the needs of the child and mother in the critical early bonding years. Ban all Child beauty pageants including trans ones (like france has done). I don't think childen can legally consent to hormone replacement drugs. I think the age of criminal responsibility should be raised should be raised to about 14. I think there are arguments to lower the age of consent in the UK to 15.
the environment
Library of things/Repair cafes in towns and cities to be able to more easily repairs good or not have to buy in the first place.
Government subsidy scheme to better insulate homes across country.
More extensive use of nuclear fission energy for electric generation.
Large scale food waste reclamation for Compost or animal feed.
Subsidy for Ground source heat pumps for poor households
Subsidy for Thermal exchangers in home for poor households
Make planned obselescene illegal. Make right to repair legally mandated.
simplify the amount and types of plastic products to make it easier to recycle goods. Ban non recyclable plastics from being used in single use items.
Make products label their expected lifetime (from average use) so consumer knows what a good long lasting product is. For large electric goods perhaps put a minimum expected lifespan for it to be sold in the UK.
I think you could legislate to make products illegal from rainforests or unsustainable harvested forest.
Tax loopholes
make all gift-aid illegal, make art donations as tax write off illegal, donations to think tanks, charities illegal as tax write-offs,
currently if you live outside the UK for more than 6 months you don't pay any income tax. I think the amount of income tax you pay should be proportionate for how long you spend in country with a bare minimum of 20% (estimate).
Make shell companies illegal so large multinationals can't escape to tax havens and not pay corporations tax. If they don't ban them from trading in the UK. This may need to be done in a coalition of states working together.
education
repeal Blair era education legislation that created needless hoops and paper work for teachers. repeal new laws that teachers can you sources from anti-capitalist, anti-democratic sources etc. repeal the Gove/Cameron legislation that made schools behave like businesses. The point of school is for the kds to work hard and earn qualifications not the teacher. It is an inherently discriminatory system. allow at GCSE much more education in technical qualifications. e.g. bricklaying, carpentry, electricians etc, machine work. I don't think they need to start at 16 or above. I think theres an argument that children should be able to leave school at 16. Some of the courses they do are pointless. Apprenticeship pay is so low that in the short term it makes more sense to get a minimum wage job. Atleast make apprenticeship pay in line with minimum wage to incentivise it rather than literally force kids to be extremely cheap labour.
self defense
I think it should be legal to carry around pepper spray, mace or stun gun. The criminals already have weapons. Why not decriminalise the ability for an individual to defend themselves especially women. Free female self defence classes.
BBC
release all BBC created media onto the Iplayer. The British Tax payer paid for it. Why shouldn't they be able to access it. Perhaps make a BBC iplayer app to host it all for foreigners to use and pay for like Netflix.
International business
Make corporations who sell goods in the UK prove that they don't come from slave/child labour. If they don't then they can't sell that product in the UK.
VAT
remove VAT for resold, recycled products, upcycled products, products that are good the planet (re-chargeable batteries, battery chargers). effectively rebrand VAT as a carbon tax. completely remove VAT on sanitary products, all energy efficiency/saving products.
Voting
like Australia make it mandatory to go to the polling booth.
University
make universities offer their humanities subjects as online only option so that people can do their degree from anywhere and not necessarily in the expensive university town. the course would be cheaper. Make foreign students pay for their healthcare when they are here.
Tourism
make foreigners pay to get into British Museums especially the big ones in london. I realise this may be cost prohibitive for smaller Museums.
Housing
change the rental legislation that tenants can legally not pay full rent if a landlord hasn't done repairs to the standard of the property when the renter moved in.
No foreigner can own more than 2 homes in the UK (in thailand you can't own any property unless you're thai)
Cap the number of a properties anyone can own. especially for buy to let landlords.
If a house has sat vacant for too long it has to be put on the market as a competitive price.
houses cannot be treated as an investment where it doesn't matter if its occupied or not. a roof over ones head is a right.
Homelessness
expand the access to homeless shelters. the best way to stop human and sex trafficking as well hard drug use to is stop homelessness.
migratory farm workers
ban migratory farm workers in the UK. there are thousands of Uni, GCSE, college and A level students who have months off school in the picking season. Why not get them to pick fruit and vegetables? same thing goes for homeless people. Get them all to pick fruit and veg.
littering & dog tax
small tax on having a dog to pay for dog park maintenance, dog bins, etc. small tax on single use packaging to pay for more Bins on high street, bins to be emptied more regularly to reduce littering. Same small tax on tobacco for cigarette butt bins.
These are all my ideas. Please critique them.

The best plain t-shirt — Typical Contents

Preface:
This is the second guide in a series from Typical Contents, a kind of “wirecutter for clothes”. It’s by the team behind Epochs, a now defunct menswear blog.
We’ll be reviewing categories of clothing in hopes of finding the best item(s) in that category. This second post focuses on finding the best plain t-shirt. We bought all 9 t-shirts we tested using our own money and there are no referral or affiliate links contained in this post.
Find our previous guide on boxer briefs here.
Have you ever seen that episode of Mad Men where Don Draper, bleary eyed, hungover and barely slept staggers into his office and pulls out a drawer in his desk to retrieve a stack of crisp white shirts, still in their packaging?
A plain t-shirt has essentially the same function for me. It's the everyday item I can put on in the morning, almost without thinking, and feel ready to face the day. I work as a fashion stylist and on shoot days, with hectic early mornings and late evenings under studio lighting, it feels essential.
On the face of it, the t-shirt is the most no-bullshit, who cares piece of clothing you can buy. It's the default everyday item for millions of people and at this point has even become the standard for some office workers (Tech billionaire Mark Zuckerberg supposedly wears the same grey t-shirt in order to save precious brain power for other more pressing decisions). So why does it matter which one you buy?
I can sympathise with this viewpoint. I encounter a lot of clothing in my work and more than in most categories (denim, footwear, coats for example) the difference between a £5 t-shirt and £70 is marginal. An affordable good quality cotton t-shirt that fits well and will last a long time can be easily had for less than £5, and the £70 equivilent isn't honestly that much better, but, if you, like me wear them just about everyday and not just as an under layer than its probably worth getting the best that you can.

Best overall

Asket egyptian cotton t-shirt
A substantial (but not heavyweight) tee with good neck fit and arm length, that holds up well in a wash. Combined with three available lengths and a transparent approach to manufacture makes it an easy recommendation for most people.
$45/£30 from Asket
Swedish direct-to-consumer brand ASKET's egyptian cotton t-shirt came out on top for us during our testing. I'm generally weary of brands claiming to have the best t-shirt ever. Best how? What metric are you measuring it by? When I surveyed a group of friends on what made a perfect t-shirt, the answers were so varied, from neckline to fabric weight to fit, that I'm not sure a perfect t-shirt exists. What I found with Asket's t-shirt, is a t-shirt that I thought satisfied most of this criteria across the board and one I thought would suit the broadest number of men. You can see the work the brand has put into balancing one element against another to create a very good t-shirt.
The fabric is weighty without feeling too heavy to be worn as an underlayer, it passes the nipple test (my nipples weren't visible through the fabric) and the neckline has a flattering and substantial rib with a slightly 1950s feel. The sleeves came about 3/4 of the way down my bicep and were fairly narrow, but, with a slight flair that made them comfortable. The t-shirt has three lengths available (short, regular and long) and opted for the regular which came to half-way down my fly and looked good both tucked and untucked. The body had a fairly straight fit that was maybe slightly on the narrow side (I wore a medium and I'm fairly slim and it fit me well) The fabric is 180gsm which is on the lower-end of heavyweight, for me the perfect all-rounder weight for a everyday tee.
I was also impressed with the transparency of the brand which extended to a sub site for the t-shirt factory in Portugal and a price breakdown with the costs of manufacture and the retail mark up. In terms of wash and wear, the ASKET t-shirt kept it's shape well and the fabric retained it's initial softness, it also kept it's whiteness (washed with standard detergent in an all white wash) and didn't noticibly shrink in a 40 degree wash cycle.
£30 is a lot for a t-shirt, and quite honestly it's likely more than I would generally spend on one and unfortunately the brand don't currently do multipacks, but, I can see the work that's gone into this t-shirt to make it flattering for the majority of men. The length options which are a rare option from most brands means this will be especially suitable for taller or smaller guys and for the ethically minded consumer the brands transparency is thorough and well presented.
The t-shirt also comes with presentation and customer service that feels premium, ordering during the early days of the Covid-19 lockdown I didn't expect the shipping to be normal but the brand made a point of pre-emptively emailing to explain when I could expect the tee, and I found the boxing and labeling to be of a nice scandinavian, minimal quality.
This is a great t-shirt, with a genuinely premium look and feel and on-balance between cost, quality and transparency. I think it's the best staple t-shirt you can buy for the most body types and tastes.

What we’d like to see improved

Although I'm impressed by the quality of the product and the transparency of the brand, I couldn't see myself making ASKET my staple t-shirt at the £30 price tag, at the end of the day even the best t-shirts wear out and discolour fairly quickly and for an everyday basic thats on the steeper side. A multi-pack option with a discount per t-shirt would make this a more attractive option for most people. I also understand that with multiple lengths as well as weights that it might be difficult but a few more seasonal colours would be welcome as well as the classic neutrals. Finally the brand has a lighter weight version of the same tee but it would be good to see a heavier weight option as well.

Also good

Sunspel Classic Cotton t-shirt
A soft and drapey, luxury t-shirt from a British heritage juggernaut. Suitable for those that prefer a more lightweight fabric.
$90 from Sunspel (US)
£70 from Sunspel (UK)
The Sunspel classic cotton t-shirt was another favourite tee of ours. Sunspel apparently has a claim to have made the first ever proper t-shirt, and the UK based heritage brand certainly makes some of the most beautiful t-shirts I've ever encountered. Super soft and drapey with a very clean neckline and detailing, it genuinely feels like a luxury product, much more so than most of the t-shirts we tested. It also washed very well and kept it's shape and colour and comes in a huge range of options in terms of pattern and tasteful colourways.
That said, at £70 it's hard to consider the Sunspel a staple piece. If you're building a capsule wardrobe there are a lot of things that are a better use of money and in testing I found the COS round neck t-shirt was a pretty good approximation of the soft, refined look of the sunspel tee (albeit fitting a bit slimmer and with not quite as much drape) and the lightness of the fabric is not going to suit all body types, if you're a heavyweight tee guy it's not for you. The brand is favourite of many of my friends in the fashion industry for good reason though, it's a beautifully made t-shirt and probably as good as such a staple item can be, albeit at a pretty hefty price, especially considering the brand does no-multipacks or discounts (but generally has pretty decent seasonal sales if you're considering giving it a go).
Basically, if you've got the money and you prefer a lighter more refined t-shirt, this is the one to go for.

Budget pick

Budget pick
UNIQLO Supima Cotton t-shirt
The best cheap everyday t-shirt comes in a more relaxed fit and will last a long time. Also available in a huge variety of colours.
$14.90 from UNIQLO (US)
£9.90 from UNIQLO (UK)
If you're just looking for a good everyday t-shirt and aren't inclined to spend more than a tenner on it then UNIQLO's supima cotton t-shirt can't be beat. The fabric is a soft supima cotton that washes and wears beautifully (my 3 year old tee's are still in good nick) and the fit is a good allround, with a slightly relaxed feel bordering on boxy that make's it suitable for most body types. It comes in a huge range of seasonal colours, it costs just under £10 and are generally produced in India.
If you prefer a heavyweight t-shirt they also have the Christophe Lemaire designed UNIQLO-U line's t-shirt which has a boxier 90's fit and an almost sweatshirt weight fabric (it was my girlfriends favourite) which is available for the same price in a range of great colours.

Why you should trust us

I'm a professional stylist, working in menswear and based in London. I work on both Editorial and E-Com shoots on a weekly basis and generally spend my time surrounded by racks of clothing. I've also written extensively about the history of clothing and style at the now defunct Epochs.co and worked previously in fashion retail and visual merchandising.
All clothing was purchased retail and worn and washed over a period of time, no gifts or discounts and no preferential treatment was given. I've no professional connections with any of the brands we reviewed.

How we tested

Researching began online. We checked some threads, professional articles and influencer guides as well as surveying industry friends for recommendations, I also took t-shirts that I had previous experience with and combined them into a short list of the t-shirts that were most consistently recommended.
I tried to cover a range of styles, weights, brands and also tried some different material make ups (though I generally stuck to cotton as the core, no Merino t-shirts were reviewed as they felt like a different category) and various countries of origin and pricepoints.
We created a set of criteria that all t-shirts were judged against (see “What to look for” below). All purchased tee's were put in rotation for several months and notes taken on first and subsequent wears. We tracked the different pairs, stored notes, and ranked them using a Notion database. Finally we compiled our findings into this article. We intend to update this page periodically as we try new pairs (keep and eye on our changelog for updates) as there are other pairs we would still like to try.

What to look for

White cotton t-shirts: For consistency we stuck pretty close to the classic white t-shirt, we didn't opt for anything too performance based or directional. I wanted to capture the best workaday t-shirt to be worn with a wide variety of styles and wide range of situations. We skipped out on anything that had an embroidered logo or contrast materials, this was about the tee.
Availability: One of the ways that we narrowed the final list was to stick to brands that specialised in basics and would consistently have the same t-shirt in stock. A staple should be available from year to year with very little change and we felt that the final selection of t-shirts reflected this well.
Colours: We tested all t-shirts in white, we felt that it was the most common staple t-shirt and allowed us to best see the fabric quality and fit across styles.
Fit: We kept track of the neckline, arms and body of the t-shirt as well as the length overall.
Material: Almost all our tee's were 100% cotton, we saw this as important for a wash and wear everyday t-shirt, that said we did try a lycra blend style from Swedish minimalists Filippa K and a very traditional loopwheeled (an older knitting method) t-shirt from German brand Merz B Schwanen.
Durability: How does the garment hold up in day to day wear? How does it cope with being washed again and again? we wanted a t-shirt that kept it's shape and it's handle and softness over repeated washings, especially with the more delicate weights. We also wanted to see how much shrinkage we could expect. t-shirts were washed on a standard 40 degree cotton cycle.
Price: We tried to have a range from the top of the market (£70 for Sunspel) to the cheapest staple t-shirts from Gildan and Fruit of the Loom which can be had for less than £2. We were concious that it would be hard to call anything above £70 a "staple" even for those with the highest budgets.
Origin: Where the garment is manufactured. Today’s shoppers are much more conscientious about the ethics of their clothing. We tried to consider the importance of transparancy around manufacture and traceability in our reviews.

The competition

I'm a big fan of the American direct to consumer brand Entireworld and was pretty excited to review their standard tee and oversized styles. Both were incredible soft and had good fits but I found they actually lost that soft handle with washing and felt somewhat flimsy, I was also a bit dissapointed to see their screenprinted labelling fading and peeling after the first wash. At $32 each they are also much more expensive than UNIQLO for what felt like a similar quality of product.
I also checked out the multiple weights of Swedish high street brand ARKET's range (not to be confused with ASKET!) I really like the brands minimalist branding and style, and some of my Stylist colleagues swear by them, but, I found the pricing on the steep side, especially for the heavyweight tee at £32 and while the fit was fine it wasn't notable. The fabric is almost micro-mesh like and comfortable with a good drape and they did wash well so they weren't bad t-shirts but I just thought the Uniqlo tee offered better value and the ASKET tee a better quality overall.
We also tried H&M group minimalist COS's basic t-shirt out. I was a big fan and felt it was closest to Sunspel in feeling like a really smart, luxurious t-shirt but it was quite drapey and slim fitting and certainly wouldn't suit every body type. If you want the feel and look of a Sunspel t-shirt on a budget then it's hard to go wrong with this one. It also washes and holds up very well, I had a navy version of it thats just starting to fray now after 5 years of heavy use.
Fruit of the Loom is one of the brands that came up again and again in lists and I knew they were one of the originators of the American t-shirt but I was deeply dissapointed by the product, the t-shirt looked and felt notably cheap and well it was but considering the Gildan heavy tee at the same price point was one of my favourites from testing I was disappointed and woudn't recommend.
I was curious about tee's with a slightly more modern and technical fabrication and I had fond memories of an older variation of Filippa 's lycra tee. The fabric was interesting, and I thought it was a nice tee in the more fitted end of things, but I did find it actually lost shape over time and the neckline didn't hold up from repeated washings, though it kept it's colour well and I'm impressed by the brands transparency about factories and sustainability. At £47 it was also one of the more expensive styles and I didn't see the value.
Finally I wanted to try a t-shirt that was as close as possible to an authentic vintage t-shirt and after researching a number of different options I went with Merz B Schwanen's 50's tee. This t-shirt is produced on loopwheeler machines, which date back to the 1930s and work very slowly to create a character full slubby textured cotton which has a bit of natural stretch in it. I really liked the feel of the fabric and the fit was cool in that classic way but at almost £50 it didn't blow me away or feel noticebly better than other options I tried. That said the brand does everything in-house and they have a huge range of t-shirts in different historical styles and weights so I would like to see more from them.

UK LibDem opinons on UK policy ideas (immigration, unions, advertising, electoral reform etc)

I'm not sure if this is allowed here. I would call myself an environmental libertarian-ish. I was a member of the Lib dems from 2012-2013. Ban the Injection of water in meat to make it look bigger.
Plain Packaging and warning labels on Junk food like cigarettes. make the nutritional information for actual representative portions. If companies shrinkflate a product then they have to put it on the packaging of the product that they have done so. Ban the sale of Alcohol and Tobacco to pregnant women (not sure how you enforce this).
Make it illegal for a company/business to throw away food stuff and make them donate it to foodbanks/food charities (Like France)
Advertising/product placement/
Ban all adverts to children in any way. I think you could also make toys/mannequins sold in the UK have realistic proportions for both boys and girls. Ban junk food ads, alcohol ads, vaping ads, gambling ads, payday loan ads, ads for big SUV/highly polluting vehicles. Ban the sponsorship of events by any of these things either. Ban product placement, ban TV shows for kids that have toys explicitly linked to them. All ads that have photo shopped used need to a sign saying they've been photo shopped and very thin models have to have a medical certificate that they are healthy (like France).

NHS
repeal the Blair laws making the NHS act more a competitive business which have proved to ineffective. Make the English NHS system more in line with the Scottish system.
Tax or in some make people who do more dangerous activities pay a small amount extra for the increased likelihood of needing the services of the NHS like motorcyclists, horse riders, extreme sportspeople.
Ban the ever greening of drugs so they can be made cheaply and generically. If a pharma company has received funding to develop a drug then it must be sold at cost (or much lower profit). Somehow democratise the access to science and medical journals e.g. higher tax, made to be free if research was publicly funded, government run science journal).
Syrian Civil war refugees should go back as well, The war is over now. basically as many people as possible should be made to go back to their country of origin without directly endangering their lives. I think the pay threshold for workers to legally migrate here should be much higher probably 40,000 pounds a year. There should ideally be no net migration to the UK each year.
children and population growth
I think the UK should aim for net 0% population growth. I think couples who want to have kids should be made to screen for any hereditary recessive genetic diseases before they plan to have a child so they can know if they're kid is going to be disabled/Birthing complications. Possibly if a couple is high risk of a genetic diseased child people should have to have in the womb embryo testing as well to see if theyre child has any genetic diseases.
I don't think children can legally consent to hormone replacement drugs. Ban Gay conversion therapy. I think the age of criminal responsibility should be raised should be raised to about 14. I think there are arguments to lower the age of consent in the UK to 15.
Euthanasia
Legalise child euthanasia (like belgium and the netherlands https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groningen_Protocol). Legalise normal euthanasia for people of any age as well.
the environment
Library of things/Repair cafes in towns and cities to be able to more easily repairs good or not have to buy in the first place.
Ban or curtail the sale of bottled war. Install more water fountains and public bathrooms instead.
Ban paper junk mail and possibly free newspapers.
Make products label their expected lifetime (from average use) so consumer knows what a good long lasting product is. For large electric goods perhaps put a minimum expected lifespan for it to be sold in the UK.
I think you could legislate to make products illegal from rainforests or unsustainable harvested forest (palm oil specifically)
The point of school is for the kids to work hard and earn qualifications not the teacher. It is an inherently discriminatory system. allow at GCSE much more education in technical qualifications. e.g. bricklaying, carpentry, electricians, machine work, DJing etc . I don't think they need to start doing it at 16 or above. I think there's an argument that children should be able to leave school at 16. Some of the courses they do are pointless. Apprenticeship pay is so low that in the short term it makes more sense to get a minimum wage job. Atleast make apprenticeship pay in line with minimum wage to incentivise it rather than literally force kids to be extremely cheap labour like now.
self defense
I think it should be legal to carry around pepper spray, mace or stun gun especially for women. The criminals already have weapons. Why not decriminalise the ability for an individual to defend themselves especially women. Free female self defence classes.
BBC
Release all BBC created media onto the Iplayer. The British Tax payer paid for it. Why shouldn't they be able to access it. Perhaps make a BBC iplayer app to host it all for foreigners to use and pay for like Netflix.
business
Make corporations who sell goods in the UK prove that they don't come from slave/child labour. If they don't then they can't sell that product in the UK. Ban or reclassify Multi Level Marketting companies as Ponzi Schemes. Label Scientology as a cult (like Germany has). Regulate detox tea and supplements like any other medicine/pharmaceutical. One day a year allow any to search for a named person and see what their salary is (Norway does this). Get rid of 1 and 2 penny, they cost too much to make for what they are.
Government
Ban former MPs from ever holding any business position once they retire. Make them divest all their business interests before being an MP. Make their spouses and children's company's to never receive state money or have a job in a state enterprise. Same goes for Generals/Civil Servants. Spread of Government facilities from London to other cities e.g. does any every ministry need to be in London? Pay HMRC accountants/auditors much more than they a company would so they tell the government the loopholes companies use to not pay tax. Make it Financially rewarding to be ethical.
VAT
Remove VAT for resold, recycled products, upcycled products, products that are good the planet (re-chargeable batteries, battery chargers). Effectively re brand VAT as a carbon tax. Completely remove VAT on sanitary products, all energy efficiency/saving products.
University
make universities offer their humanities subjects as an online only option as well as in person so that people can do their degree from anywhere and not necessarily in the expensive university town. The course would be cheaper. Make foreign students pay for their healthcare when they are here. Give less money to unis with more beneficiary (e.g. red brick unis). They already have so many endowments they don't need as much from the state. Foreign students can't work at all while studying here.
Rent control for a property inline with inflation for renters.
There are thousands of underemployed Uni, GCSE, college and A level students who have months off school in the picking season. Why not pay them to pick fruit and vegetables? Same thing goes for homeless people. Get them all to pick fruit and veg.
littering & dog tax
Small tax on having a dog to pay for dog park maintenance, dog bins, etc. Small tax on single use packaging to pay for more Bins on high street, bins to be emptied more regularly to reduce littering. Same small tax on tobacco for cigarette butt bins.
Misc
Legalise Polygamy.
These are all my ideas. Please critique them.

UK Labour opinions on UK policy ideas (immigration, unions, advertising, electoral reform etc)

I'm not sure if this is allowed here. I would call myself an environmental libertarian-ish. I am member of the Labour Party. I am a Marxist in that I use a materialistic interpretation of history and events. I have some ideas that I think would benefit the UK. Some of which are in line with Labour ideas. I would love to know what you guys think or what you think would be a better idea. Please criticize. I hope to have a dialogue about this as much as possible.
Drugs
Decriminalise all drugs (much like portugal) treat it as a mental health issue. A lot of people take drugs because of homelessness and poverty so by dealing with those hard drug use will go down. Legalise Cannabis, Mushrooms (and most hallucinegics), LSD, MDMA, Steroids and Cocaine (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2009/jun/13/bad-science-cocaine-study). Tax them inline with the estimated costs for misuse of them. Regulate them like tobacco and alcohol.
Obesity and Food
Ban the sale of energy drinks to children below 16. Ban the sale of very sweet confectionery and drinks to children below 16 (some Mexican states have done it recently), This includes in schools. Tax very fatty, sugary or nutritionally rare foods in line with what the estimated costs are for the NHS to deal with the health problems caused by them (much the same way we do with alcohol, tobacco and in my tax system other drugs). Possibly Ban the use of High Fructose Corn Syrup and Margarine in UK foods. Possibly make it mandatory to fortify very cheap foods with minerals and vitamins so the impoverished can get more nutrients. although the body doesn't absorb these very well so it might be pointless.
Gambling/Games
Ban or reclassify Loot box systems in games. Either make the lottery state run and recieve all the profits for public work or ban it and replace it with a government bond deposit scheme like premium bonds but a lower threshold to enter.
NHS
repeal the Blair laws making the NHS act more a competitive business which have proved to ineffective.
Voting
Like Australia make it mandatory to go to the polling booth.
University
make universities offer their humanities subjects as an online only option as well as in person so that people can do their degree from anywhere and not necessarily in the expensive university town. The course would be cheaper. Make foreign students pay for their healthcare when they are here. Give less money to unis with more beneficiary (e.g. red brick unis). They already have so many endowments they don't need as much from the state. Foreign students can't work at all while studying here.
Rent control for a property inline with inflation for renters.
These are all my ideas. Please critique them.
